Understanding Adjustable Props: Load Calculation and Safe Use
Incorrect prop spacing is a major cause of slab shuttering failures. Learn how to calculate safe working loads for adjustable props based on slab thickness, concrete grade and pour rates.
Understanding Prop Load Ratings
Adjustable props are rated for safe working load (SWL) at a specific extension. A 2+2 prop fully retracted at 1.5m might be rated 4.0 tonnes SWL. The same prop extended to 2.8m may be rated only 2.0 tonnes. This dramatic reduction is due to the increased slenderness ratio causing buckling risk. Always work from the manufacturer's load-extension chart, not a single number stamped on the prop body.
Calculating Slab Load Per Prop
For a 150mm RCC slab (density 25 kN/m³): slab dead load = 0.15m × 25 = 3.75 kN/m². Add formwork self-weight (~0.5 kN/m²) and construction live load (1.5 kN/m²) = total 5.75 kN/m². For a prop grid of 1.5m × 1.5m, each prop carries 5.75 × 1.5 × 1.5 = 12.94 kN ≈ 1.32 tonnes. At 2.5m extension, most 2+2 props are safe to 2.5 tonnes — this gives a safety factor of 1.9. For a 200mm slab, total load rises to ~7 kN/m², and the prop load becomes 1.58 tonnes — still within limits at 1.5m grid. Go to 200mm slab with 2m grid and you hit 2.8 tonnes per prop — requiring a stronger prop or closer grid.
The Critical Zone: Pour Rate and Dynamic Load
Fresh concrete is a fluid and exerts lateral pressure on formwork and dynamic load on propping as it is placed. The faster the pour rate, the higher the peak load. For slabs poured by pump at 10 m³/hour, pressure can momentarily exceed static calculations by 30–40%. Your prop grid should be sized for 1.4× the calculated static load when using pump placement. Slow bucket-crane pours allow each area to begin initial set before adjacent areas are loaded — this can be accounted for with experienced engineering judgement.
Re-propping and Back-propping
When pouring upper floors before the lower slab has reached full design strength, loads are transferred down through multiple levels. This is called back-propping. As a rule of thumb, maintain propping on the two floors immediately below a fresh pour for slabs up to 200mm thick, or three floors for thicker slabs or heavily loaded situations. Never strip propping from a lower floor simply because the upper slab looks solid — concrete reaches only ~65% of 28-day strength at 7 days.
Practical Site Tips
1. Spray paint a reference mark on each prop at the maximum safe extension — workers can see at a glance if a prop is over-extended. 2. Use the same prop size throughout a pour to simplify inspection. 3. Check every prop head is in full contact with the channel above — even 5mm of eccentricity significantly reduces capacity. 4. Never weld to, heat, or bend props on site — this compromises the heat treatment of the tube. 5. Grease the inner tube and thread before each use — a stuck thread forces over-extension.
